The History of Moorhaven

The history of Moorhaven is obviously rich and varied. Moorhaven was once the Plymouth Asylum, which was erected in respect to an 1880s mental health act that specified each major city and county to have an asylum. This asylum included the main building, a house, mortuary, lodges, gasworks and farm/maintenance buildings and is now fully converted into accommodation for the residents of Moorhaven village.

The reason behind this was the decision within the 1980s to dispose of the majority of asylums. There was an early plan that wanted to turn Moorhaven into a 350 home settlement, however this proposal was turned down by Dartmoor National Park planing Dept. The hospital was listed to tender in 1993 and Andrea Peacock and Jonathan Mathys won the site and developed the village of Moorhaven that was finished in 1998.

Each property owner living within Moorhaven is a shareholder in the Management Company, which owns all of the internal roads, lighting facilities, sports facilities and communal gardens (amongst others) and is responsible for maintaining the village as a whole, giving the area a warm, communal feeling that is lacking within the vast majority of English towns and villages. Moorhaven is one of those unique locations with a different quality of life, leaving you feeling happy and refreshed whether you are visiting or you are residing in the village.

With such stunning scenery in which to enjoy outdoor activities, Moorhaven is the ideal spot all year round in any season.
